It all started when…

Tina Leikam told her husband Bob about the World’s Largest Sandwich that was made in Taft during the 1975 Oildorado celebration. Bob and Tina owned Domino’s Pizza and were inspired to try to break a record during the 100-year celebration of the City of Taft during Oildorado.

 

The Details

The 2010 Guinness World Record event started at 4:00pm on Friday October 22nd & ended at 4:00pm on Saturday October 23, A total of 6,838 pizzas had been baked by a team of approximately 100 participants creating an all new Guinness World Record.

The official record states:

The most pizzas made in 24 hours by a team is 6,838 achieved by Domino's Pizza #8209 and (former) owners Bob and Tina Leikam in Taft, California on 22 - 23 October 2010. (The event was listed in the 2012 edition book).

Guinness requirements:

  • pizzas must have toppings of at least tomato & cheese (or equivalent (They added pepperoni.)

  • pizzas must have a minimum diameter of 12"

  • pizzas must be prepared manually without the aid of machinery

  • two synchronized stop watches must be used to time the event

  • the entire event must be filmed (showing each pizza exiting the ovens) and given to the GWR rep. as verification

  • official count will be confirmed by the GWR representative (from New York city) who was there on site for event

  • must reach at least 5,000 pizzas to be recognized

Notable happenings during the event:

  • TUHS students helped fold 7,000 pizza boxes for the event & stored at Jo's Restaurant next door.

  • The world's largest pizza bag was created with the help of Adam's Upholstery of Taft which held 200 pizzas.

  • Golden Tickets were pre-sold so you did not have to wait in line. Some customers waited up to two (2) hours during event.

  • "Pony Express" like riders were used to deliver pizzas on horses to the new Oil Workers Monument; the Fort & Oil Museum

  • October 23rd was anniversary of the last Pony Express delivery in California 1861.

  • The oven company sent a representative from Kansas with a box of parts so he could repair an oven if any problems.
